Central Utilities Plants

TVC has extensive experience developing process control systems for central utilities plants, including:

Pfizer Global Research Division - Groton, CT
  • Control of Balance of Plant and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition for over 29,000 tons of chiller capacity in three plants
  • System consists of fifteen absorption and electric chillers
  • Distribution to a large research campus area
  • Energy monitoring
  • Three chiller plants operated from a single control room
  • Reduced operations staff requirement due to remote access capability
  • Remote operation, monitoring, data acquisition, service and support of Balance of Plant and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system
  • Control of balance of plant and supervisory control and data acquisition for over 3,000 tons of chiller capacity
  • 1,500 ton absorption chiller uses waste heat from engine generators to carry base cooling load
  • Absorption chiller is supplemented by 1,500 ton electric chiller to carry peak loads
  • Total energy center is designed to be operated by one operator per shift.

Central Connecticut State University Total Energy Center - New Britain, CT (PDF - 290K)
  • Total energy plant supervisory control and data acquisition system producing steam, chilled water and 2.5 MW of electrical power for university campus
  • Two Cummins dual fueled reciprocating engine generators with duct fired HRSGs
  • Waste heat from engine generators used to generate hot water and chilled water for campus loads
  • All field instrumentation and automated control valves

Bradley International Airport - Windsor, CT
  • Control of Balance of Plant and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition for over 2,200 tons of chiller capacity
  • Distribution to airport terminals and other airport facilities
  • Absorption chiller uses waste heat from engine powered electrical generation system to furnish base load
  • Electric chillers powered by electricity produced by engine generating system
  • Control system design enables single operator attendance or operation from a remote location
  • Remote operation, monitoring, data acquisition, service and support of Balance of Plant and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system

Connecticut Juvenile Training Center - Middletown, CT
  • Control of Balance of Plant and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition for over 1,500 tons of chiller capacity
  • Distribution to facility
  • Remote operation, monitoring, data acquisition, service and support of Balance of Plant and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system

Hartford Steam Company - Hartford, CT
  • Control of Balance of Plant and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition for over 34,000 tons of chiller capacity as well as the distribution of chilled water, hot water and steam to most of downtown Hartford, CT
  • This district heating and cooling system heats and cools over 16 million square feet of commercial, industrial, residential and governmental space and is the worlds largest district cooling system
  • Includes off peak chilled water storage capacity to maximize chiller plant utilization
  • River water is also used as a cooling medium through heat exchangers
  • Chilled water produced in five operating plants controlled from two control rooms to minimize the number of operators required
  • Remote plant operation saves the company over $1,750,000.00/ year in cost of operators
  • Remote operation, monitoring, data acquisition, service and support of Balance of Plant and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system
  • DEP Reports generated
